About this trial

This study compares darunavir/r to lopinavir/r (the 'r' signifies that a small dose of ritonavir is also used) in people who are treatment experienced.

The study will compare these two approaches for their safety and tolerability, as well as their effectiveness(Of a drug or treatment). The maximum ability of a drug or treatment to produce a result regardless of dosage. A drug passes efficacy trials if it is effective at the dose tested and against the illness for which it is prescribed. In the standard procedure, Phase II clinical trials gauge efficacy, and Phase III trials confirm it. in fighting HIV.

In the standard procedure, Phase II clinical trials gauge efficacy, and Phase III trials confirm it. of protease inhibitors can often be improved by using a small dose of a second protease inhibitor (ritonavir) to 'boost' the level of drug in the bloodstream.  

Most protease inhibitors can be improved using this approach. In fact, lopinavir is never used alone and is only available in its boosted form under the brand name Kaletra.

How long is this trial planned to go for?Participants in this trial will be asked to take the trial drug for 32 weeks. Following the conclusion of the trial, participants will be followed up for a further 96 weeks.

Who can enrol in this trial?

You may be eligible to participate in this trial if you meet the following criteria:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Viral load at least 1000 copies/ml
  • Have been taking combination antiviral treatment for at least 12 weeks
