DSP Impairment Table Review - NAPWA Update

As part of the Australian Government’s review of the Disability Support Pension, an Advisory Committee was established in April 2010. Since then there has been national consultation and analysis across the community based sector to support the development of reasonable and equitable Impairment Assessment Tables that best recognise people needing disability support, and that are appropriate for a wide range of illnesses and disabilities. read more »

From the Executive Director's report:

NAPWA has again, this year, provided high-level health and policy advocacy on behalf of PLHIVPerson (or people) Living with HIV. This term is now preferred over the older PLWHA. across the country and this has been in direct response to the emerging issues raised by our member organisations and their constituents. This reporting period has also brought us to the midpoint for both the NAPWA Strategic Plan, and the 6th National HIV Strategy. read more »

HIV, Criminal Law and Public Health Forum held

Criminal prosecutions involving HIV transmission or exposure are becoming more common around the world, including in Australia. These prosecutions, and the media they generate, have sparked renewed interest in the intersection of criminal law and public health measures.

To facilitate discussion of these issues and potential options for policy reform, the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAOAustralian Federation of AIDS Organisations. AFAO is the peak non-government organisation representing Australia's community-based response to HIV/AIDS. AFAO's work includes education, policy, advocacy and international projects. ) and the National Association for People Living with HIV/AIDS (NAPWA) hosted an HIV, Criminal Law and Public Health Forum in Canberra, on the 29th September. read more »

HIV Genotype test approved - a very long awaited moment!

After years of lobbying by NAPWA, in the detail of the Budget papers the HIV Genotype test is mentioned and will be processed for the Medicare schedule.

The amendments to the Medicare Benefits Schedule include:

• addition of a new test for HIV infected patients who are about to commence or change their schedule of antiretroviralA medication or other substance which is active against retroviruses such as HIV. therapy; read more »
