ASHM 2008: New treatments

Recent results from studies of some of newer antiretrovirals were presented at ASHM. Here’s a brief summary.

Nanosuspension: a new treatment breakthrough?

A presentation at the International AIDS Conference looked at nanosuspension, a formulation of very small crystals which have been reduced to approximately twice the diameter of an HIV particle.

Darunavir and the risk of hepatitis

A warning has been issued by Tibotec, the manufacturers of Prezista (darunavir) regarding the risk of developing drug- induced hepatitis while taking the treatment.

Steven: Surviving long-term

Even among long-term survivors, Steven has survived more than most. Steven has been near death a number of times, and has always found the strength to pull through. Despite numerous obstacles, Steven has always been able to find the strength to work out ways to make the best of his situation and develop new strategies to manage his health.

NAPWA Treataware project launched

NAPWA’s Treataware Project, a phone line, clinical trials website and booklet giving advice on treatments and living well with HIV, was launched by Dr Jonathan Anderson, President of ASHM on May 19 in Sydney.

Treataware – coming soon

Treataware, a suite of major NAPWA/ATPA treatments intitatives, will be launched in May 2008.

Managing side effects

This booklet is for people with HIV who experience side effects from HIV treatments or other physical symptoms that may be due to HIV infection. It will help you identify side effects, and provides suggestions on how to prevent, manage, reduce or eliminate some common side effects.
