An encouraging outcome of the DUET studies is that etravirine is effective against HIV mutations resistant [1]HIV which has mutated and is less susceptible to the effects of one or more anti-HIV drugs is said to be resistant. to existing NNRTIs, efavirenz and nevirapine. Investigators found that 89% who had resistance after treatment with nevirapine were susceptible to etravirine and 91% of patients whose virus [2]A small infective organism which is incapable of reproducing outside a host cell. was resistant to efavirenz benefited from treatment with the new drug. Etravirine is currently available in Australia on compassionate access.
