Dr Alex Wodak, director of drug and alcohol services at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, speaking at the unveiling of the World AIDS Recognition mural in Victoria Street, Darlinghurst, on 25 March. Dr Wodak told the crowd that the mural was located on the site of Australia’s first needle exchange, which opened without government approval at the height of the AIDS crisis on 12 November 1986. The work, by artist Steven Vella, was co-sponsored by St Vincent’s and South Sydney Council.
