These courses, held in collaboration with the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine (ASHM), provide an overview of current experience of HIV in Australia and the region.
Included is an introduction to the basic science associated with HIV including, transmission and viral reproduction, intracellular activity and implications for untreated and treated disease. Issues covered include the importance of antiretroviral therapy, and the latest strategies affecting when to start, change and stop treatment as well as concepts of Post Exposure Prophylaxis and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring.
Panel presentations and group work with case studies provides insight in to clinical research, trials and ethics in HIV, as well as highlighting issues facing diverse communities. Basic and Update Courses for HIV Community Workers and Volunteers are held annually.
