Short Course in HIV Medicine - for community workers

The AIDS Treatment Project Australia (ATPA) in collaboration with The Australian Society for HIV Medicine (ASHMAustralasian Society for HIV Medicine. The peak Australasian organisation representing the medical and health sector in HIV/AIDS and related areas. ) offers their two-day Short Course in HIV Medicine for Community Workers, to be held on 14 & 15 September 2006 in Sydney.

The objectives of this course are:

  • To provide an understanding of the current experience of HIV in Australia and the region
  • To provide the basic science associated with HIV including, transmission and viral reproduction, intracellular activity and implications for treatment and untreated and treated disease
  • To provide participants with an understanding of how the basic science and pathogenesis impacts on decision making about treatment regimens and the implications this has for treatment combination selection
  • To provide a brief overview of current Opportunistic Infections and their prophylaxes
  • To provide an understanding of the issues around and the importance of HAARTHighly Active AntiRetroviral Therapy ??? aggressive treatment of HIV infection using several different drugs together.
  • To provide an introduction to the latest strategies affecting when we start and change treatment
  • To provide participants with an introduction to the concept of Post Exposure Prophylaxis
  • To provide an introduction to drug monitoring concepts in order to individualise drug dose to achieve better clinicalPertaining to or founded on observation and treatment of participants, as distinguished from theoretical or basic science. outcomes
  • To provide insight and skills in to counseling for newly diagnosed clients, and extenuating issues for positive people.
  • To provide an introduction to the mechanics of the Pharmaceutical Benefits and Special Access Schemes
  • To provide group interactive sessions around side effects, interactions and adverse reactions highlighting the difficulties in distinguishing causes of certain reactions
  • To highlight the issues facing diverse communities with Positive People telling their stories
