Defeating HIV

NAPWHA is a key partner in Australia's coordinated response to HIV. Working with governments, the pharmaceutical industry, the research sector and other community-based organisations, NAPWHA ensures that the voices of people with HIV are heard at every level of the response.

NAPWHA is committed to action to reduce HIV infections in Australia and our region, and to improve the capacity of communities affected by HIV to participate in the response to the epidemic.

HIV diagnoses up

HIV in Australia

Last year, hiv diagnoses rose in Australia by 8.2%. that amounts to 1137 new cases total — up 86 from 2010 — and the highest number since 1992.

Given the direction we want transmission statistics to be heading, this news came as a bit of a disappointment when it was announced at the conference in Melbourne. read more »

The Melbourne Declaration identifies key priorities

Release of bold new HIV Strategy for NSW applauded

AFAO welcomes the appointment of new AusAID ambassador for HIV, malaria and TB

The Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations has welcomed the appointment of a new Australian ambassador for HIV, malaria and tuberculosis.

The Foreign Minister, Bob Carr, has announced that James Gilling will succeed Murray Proctor in the role.

Mr Gilling is currently First Assistant Director General, Policy and Sector Division, AusAIDAustralian Agency for International Development. Australian Government agency responsible for managing the Australian Government's official overseas aid program. read more »

US PrEP guidelines released

As a follow-up to the preliminary guidelines regarding pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for men who have sex with men, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have also issued interim recommendations for heterosexually active adults. read more »

Where are we with rapid HIV testing?

Australia has yet to approve rapid HIV testing. Currently, the only way to access the technology is through clinical trials.

Two of these are in the final stages of data collection and analysis, with results due to be presented at the Australasian HIV/AIDS Conference in October. read more »
