HIV Genotype test approved - a very long awaited moment!

After years of lobbying by NAPWA, in the detail of the Budget papers the HIV Genotype test is mentioned and will be processed for the Medicare schedule.

The amendments to the Medicare Benefits Schedule include:

• addition of a new test for HIV infected patients who are about to commence or change their schedule of antiretroviralA medication or other substance which is active against retroviruses such as HIV. therapy;

This test is used to assist doctors in determining HIV resistanceHIV which has mutated and is less susceptible to the effects of one or more anti-HIV drugs is said to be resistant. present, and assists in the choices of drugs that will best work for the individual.
